What is a key date?

A key date is a term used in coin collecting that refers to a particular date, or date & mint combination in a series of coins, that are harder to obtain, or rarer, than other coins in the series.

Morgan Silver Dollar key dates are among the rarest U.S. minted coins available. Along with being comprised of 90% silver, the rarity of the Morgan Silver Dollar key dates helps maintain their value. Key Dates are highly collectible and maintain their values throughout the years.

One of the most sought after key date Morgan Silver Dollars is the 1895-P (Philadelphia ) proofs. According to the U.S. Mint, 12,000 Morgan Silver Dollars were struck in 1895 at the Philadelphia mint, however there are no existing examples of this coin. However there were also 880 Morgan Dollar proofs at the Philadelphia mint. Of the 880 proofs reported only about 75 to 100 have been accounted for.
