VAMs are a special variety or repeated error. The term VAM is a acronym combining the names of the two authors that published a book documenting these known variations over 40 years ago. Leroy C. Van Alland and A. George Mallis wrote the their publication focusing on Morgan silver dollars (1878 - 1904/1921 and the Peace Dollars (1921 - 1935). There are approximately 6,000 VAMs known to be in existance today.
Some of the most well known VAMs that are highly collectible would include: 1878-P: 7/8 Tail Feathers, VAM-44, "The King of VAMs", 1879-CC: Clear CC, 1882-O over S, 1887-O: 7 over 6, 1888-O: ScarFace, 1888-O: Doubled Obverse ("Hot Lips"), 1900-O over CC, 1901-P: "Shifted Eagle" Doubled Reverse, 1903-S: Micro S.
