The San Francisco mint was opened in 1854 to serve the gold mines during the California gold rush. It's second building known as the "The Granite Lady" survived the great 1906 earthquake and fire.
Mint marks are located appear underneath the tail feathers on the coin's reverse between the D and O of the word Dollar. Other additional city mint marks would include CC for Carson City, D for Denver, P for Philadelphia and P for Philadelphia.
