Proof coins are early issues of coins, usually made for checking the dies, and for archival purposes. However due to their popularity, they are being struck in greater numbers, to meet collectors demands.
There are a few interesting proof years for Morgan silver dollars. The most collectible and most scarce dates/mints are: 1889-CC: 350,000, 1893-S: 100,000 and 1895 Proof: 12,880 (880 Proofs + 12,000 Business Strikes). The 1895 Proof is by far the most valueable with the lowest known numbers. Additionally the 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar Chapman Proofs are highly collectible
