The New Orleans mint was in operation during two separate times. The first years were from 1838 to 1861 and again in 1879 to 1909. It produced over 427 million gold and silver coins. The closure between 1861 and 1879 was due to the American Civil war and it's reconstruction years following the war.
Mint marks are located appear underneath the tail feathers on the coin's reverse between the D and O of the word Dollar. Other additional city mint marks would include CC for Carson City, D for Denver, P for Philadelphia and S for San Francisco.
