They call it the Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of U.S. Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars. And yes, it should be called an Encyclopedia! They cover every aspect one could think of when it comes to our collection.
You can buy this book used on Amazon for a very reasonable price. I have seen them as low as $18.00. but the price varies depending on who is selling the book at the exact moment you decide to buy the book. There are 316 pages of pure Morgan and Peace dollar facts! Starting off at the beginning with the background on the silver dollar, the minting, developing the design, of course different varieties. This book goes into the GSA Sale and how that operation was set up to how they package the silver dollars and mailed them. The book also talks about preserving silver dollars and how to photograph them! Great reference book to own!
Morgan Silver Dollar 1878-1904 +1921
Good information about the mint marks on the Morgan Dollar! Did you know the only date to have the D mint mark was the 1921 Silver dollar minted in Denver. The mint went all out this year minting 44,690,000 in Philadelphia, 20,345,000 in Denver and 21,695,000 in San Francisco.
He talks about the intricate detail of the coin, almost a piece of art he says. I say yes, it's a piece of art! When you look a the beautiful design and all the delicate work that went into creating each and every die. All the people involved in the creation, it's amazing!
One of the easiest places to see wear on a coin is the Eagles feathers so keep an eye on those when judging a grade. Keep an eye on the trail feathers as well as the blossoms on the obverse side of the coin. Don't forget about the wheat stalks you will want to see some definition.
He talks about when you get up to MS65 state better look to a one of the two major grading companies for a grade. The NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) or PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service).
