After the Pittman Act, which called for over 270 million coins to be melted back into silver bullion, the Morgan Dollar returned with the 1921 silver dollar. This was the last year Morgan silver dollars were minted. Philadelphia minted 44,690,000, Denver produced 20,345,000 and San Francisco struck 21,695,000 coins for the 1921 silver dollar.
The intersting item to note about the 1921 silver morgan dollar is that politically connected promoter and numismatist Farran Zerbe arranged to have a limited number of proof examples of the re-introduced Morgan dollar struck at both the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints. These dies used had hairline from insufficient polishing. Next, the influential coin dealer Henry Chapman with his relationship with chief engraver George T. Morgan struck high quality proof, creating a new rarity in the Morgan Silver Dollar world called the Chapman Proof
