1888 Morgan Dollar

1888 Silver Dollar

The 1888 Morgan Dollar is one of two prominent double dies. First we have the1888 O Doubled Head and the 1901 P shifted Eagle. There is question about how both of those occurred, Since the die shift is so great you would think the outer portion of the coin would contain doubling as well. The thought is the doubling must have happened before the last impression.

What is a Doubled Die?

A working die might need between seven to ten blows from a working hub.  Between each of these blows the die was allowed to cool slowly to remove stresses. You won't find too many doubled dies since they were extremely careful to inspect the die between each blow.

1888 Silver Dollar has a circulation strike of 19,183,000 and 832 proofs. The 1888 Silver Dollar has the lowest number of surviving proofs next to the 1921 Silver Dollar.

1888-O Silver Dollar has a circulation strike of 12,150,000 and 0 proofs. In 1888 some Silver Dollars were struck at the New Orleans mint with a doubled die obverse that created a significant doubling of Miss Liberty's lips, nose and chin. The unusual variety is listed as 1888-O VAM-4, but most folks just refer to it as simply "hot lips".

1888-S Silver Dollar has a circulation strike of 657,000 and 0 proofs.
