1886 Morgan Silver Dollar

You won’t find any Carson Morgan Dollars in the 1886 Morgan Dollar series. Actually you won’t find any in 1887 or the 1888 series either. Times were tough for the Carson City mint during this time period.

It was expensive to ship silver to Carson City to be minted into Silver dollars. If silver wasn’t purchased at a low price they just wouldn’t ship it to Carson City which is why we have some low mintage years like 1879, 1880 and 1881 Morgan Dollars. Then add the fact that Grover Cleveland was elected president in 1884 who is not known for favoring the silver interests in the western states. There was also the death of James Crawford superintendent of the Carson City Mint in 1885. It wasn’t until 1889 thanks to the election of 1888 president Benjamin Harrison who did indeed support the silver interests giving the green light for the mint. In October 1889 the Morgan Dollar was minted again in Carson city.   

1886 Silver Dollar has a circulation strike of 19,630,000 and 886 proofs.

1886-O Silver Dollar has a circulation strike of 10,710,000 and 0 proofs. Surprisingly with the high mintage numbers it is hard to find in uncirculated condition and even harder for gems.

1886-S Silver Dollar has a circulation strike of 750,000 and 0 proofs.
