1881 Morgan Silver Dollar

Why were there low mintage in Carson City for the 1881 Morgan dollar, 1879, and 1880. The Bland-Allison Act was in force at that time meaning the United States Treasury had to purchase between 2-4 million worth of silver each month that would be coined into silver dollars. Carson City had a limited capacity of coining silver dollars compared to the other mints, but their coinage was lower than normal during that time period.

Before 1885 U.S. Treasury director Burchard and assistant Secretary French, Treasurer Wyman thought silver should only be delivered to Carson City  when they could purchase the silver at a reasonable rates. The cost of shipping to Carson City was more than shipping elsewhere making it more expensive to coin Morgan dollars in Carson City. 1880 Silver Dollar has a circulation strike of 9,162,991 and 984 proofs. This coin is fairly easy to find in mint state.

1881-CC Silver Dollar has circulation strike of 296,000 and 0 proofs.

1881-O Silver Dollar has a circulation strike of 5,708,000 and 0 proofs.

1881-S Silver Dollar has a circulation strike of 12,760,000 and 0 proofs. The 1181-S Silver Dollar is the most common in the series. You can still find a vibrant and appealing example from this San Francisco mint.
