What is an overdate error?

There is an 1880 Morgan Dollar overdate error. In fact this error can be seen in a number of 1880 O, S, CC and P! What is an overdate error? When you have one year punched over another year date on a die. There have been quite a few re-punched obverse die overdates found in that year in fact 16 have been identified. Making this a very interesting Morgan dollar series. One of the best examples would be the 1880 CC 80/79 you can actually see both the 7 and the 9 on the inside of the 80! Another year that was found to have an overdate error was the 1887 P and O which had one each.
